Preamble
Topic: Whole of Sport” Discussion
Proposal: To authorise the Board in early 2025 to constitute a conference/online to discuss a range of important, cross-cutting topics.
Background
Over the past few years, a number of important issues have arisen which go to the heart of the nature of our sport and its future, and a range of views have been expressed informally on these issues.
Before proposing specific actions to address these issues, I think it would be very useful to have a wide-ranging discussion so that we can share views and experiences and the Board can have a clearer idea of MNAs’ thinking, as well as other key participants in the community, on these important topics, and to determine whether there is a broad consensus on how to proceed.
Depending on the outcomes of the discussion, the Board will then implement the outcomes, and/or develop specific proposals for MNAs’ consideration if amendments to the existing Statutes and/or handbooks are required. It should be noted that the conference itself would not make decisions, but the discussions and outcomes from the conference would be an important consideration in the Board’s thinking and further action on these issues.
The agenda for the conference can be finalised in consultation with MNAs but, in my view, the discussion should focus on a number of key areas:
-
-
- How do we define our sport?
- What makes our sport different/unique from other table football games?
- Do we care that it is unique or not?
- If we do care, how do we retain that uniqueness?
- Does this uniqueness help us promote ourselves?
- Should we be looking harder at our equipment?
- Where are the boundaries?
- Should there be boundaries?
- Should we be looking harder at how we present ourselves?
- Player presentation
- Decorum
- Venues
- Decoration of venues
- What can we do to better promote our sport to younger people?
- What steps have already been taken which are working?
- What else can be done at the FISTF, MNA and club level to recruit younger players?
- What is the place of Subbuteo in FISTF?
- Is there a place?
- Do we create a ‘Subbuteo/”old rules”’ section within FISTF to:
- Standardise rules
- Standardise equipment/materials
- Should we limit this ‘section’ to one ‘style’?
- Do we try and formalise our relationship with Hasbro/Longshore/Subbuteo?
- What would we get out of it?
- What can we offer Hasbro/Longshore/Subbuteo?
- Balance of FISTF events versus national/non-FISTF events
- How many events should/can be staged over a month/year?
- Should national events be included in the FISTF World Ranking (WR), and how?
- Should we place restrictions on players participating in ‘elite’ events such as Majors/World Cups? Should they be required to have a WR (in other words, no beginners or non-active players)? Should there be a restriction on age categories in some larger events, for example, the Majors?
- How do we break the cycle of:
- Poor flicking
- Poor behaviour
- How do we define our sport?
-
