Luca Colangelo and TFC Mattersburg on top at the Major of Mattersburg

In the first week-end of August the FISTF Major of Mattersburg was played in Austria with 54 players from six different countries taking part. There was a big surprise in the Open category as Luca Colangelo from italy won the title. He beat Daniele Pochesci in the semi (1-0) and Alexander Haas in the final (3-0). Marios Strommer won the U19 section but lost the U15 final to Italy’s Riccardo Lazzari. The veterans tournament was very open but in the end, Lucio Canicchio from Italy beat Günther Bamberzky in the final. The team event saw 10 teams competing. TFC Mattersbrug won the final against the Italians of Pisa while Fiamme Azzurre and Wiener Neustadt lost in the semis.

Claudio Murcilli wins in Buenos Aires

After an intense weekend of play, Claudio Murcilli emerges winner of the International Open of Buenos Aires.

Saturday, Renato Murcilli defeated Edgar Schoenfeld (1-0) and won the Buenos Aires Satellite Tournament. On sunday, after many thrilling matches, several players emerged winners in their respective categories.

Satellite open winner Renato Murcilli could not keep up the pace and was defeated 1-0 on the Shoot-out by Agustin Ortega for the title of the U-19 category. Later, top player Fabrizio Bertolini won the Veteran Category with a 1-0 win over Claudio Murcilli.

In the Open Tournament, however, Claudio Murcilli, 2011 South American Champion, picked up the slack and defeated Gonzalo Gomez in the finals (1-0), after sending away Sebastian Pesci, by a 2-0 score.

Report and Results of FISTF Los Angeles Open

A great day’s play was enjoyed by thirteen players at the FISTF Los Angeles Open, and we very pleased to welcome Thomas and Trisha Baumeler from Switzerland, on tour in California for a month. Perhaps fate dictated that Trisha and Thomas met together in the quarter-finals in a very tight family affair, with Thomas finally just edging the tie on shots. In the final, USA no. 2 Dan Cranston could have hoped at half time that he had one hand on the title, as he raced into a 3-0 lead over Zach Walker. However, Zach showed yet again why currently his Subbuteo is a level apart in the USA, staging a 3-3 comeback with two minutes left, and scoring the winner five minutes into overtime. A great performance by both players. The event was competitive and intense, but there was no yelling every time a goal was scored (103 goals) and the games conducted in a sporting manner. Thanks to everyone for taking part, and especially to the USA players Dan Cranston, Erik Haefke and Zach Walker, who each travelled over 3000 miles or over 1000 miles to participate in this event and the ASA Nationals yesterday. We wish the event could have had more players. But in the USA (the third largest country in the world after Russia and Canada) we face enormous logistical issues in bringing together a substantial number of players from maybe 21 different playing States to play Subbuteo together. Playing maybe 5-6 games on American Nationals day can mean 1000-3000 miles of air and car rental travel for participants not living in the host state. These isolation issues compound when we (as we did this year) look at sending teams to the World Cup and Champions League, not just the travel it takes but the cost for individuals. The same can be said of playing Canada, Mexico or Brazil, something we’d love to do one day. In the future, sponsorship is the way to go. The potential here in the USA remains huge. And at ground level, we’d like to welcome a new player who has joined the Southern California Subbuteo League whilst visiting the Nationals this week-end, Damir Vranjes. Welcome Damir. Bjorn Kegenbein wins the Open of Rain

The Open of Rain took place this week-end and there were big winners. Germany’s Bjorn Kegenbein beat Christophe Dheur (Belgium) in the Open final. Martin Antoine (Belgium) beat Marios Strommer (Austria) in the U15 final. Local player Moritz Jung was the U19 champion. In the veterans, it was an Austria affair with Günther Bamberzky finally beating Karl-Heinz Haider 2-1 to win the trophy.

The team event was played on sunday with a belgian final. Rochefort TS (picture) beat SC Stembert to lift the trophy.

Cédric Garnier wins in Osaka

The International Open of Osaka took place on January 20 with a field of 14 players. Besides the 12 Japanese players from the clubs of Yamato, Osaka and Yokohama, there were 2 foreign competitors: Cédric Garnier from France (who lives in Japan) and John Ho from Singapore. The foreign players proved to have more experience and qualified for the final. Cédric Garnier gave no chance to John Ho and won the game 1-0.

Double success for Filipe Maia

The FISTF Open of Porto took place last week-end with some of the country’s top players taking part. In the Open category, it was a very classic final betwene Filipe Maia and Sérgio Loureiro. Maia won 3-2 while Norberto Miguel and Ruben Português lost in the semis. Filipe Maia had a perfect week-end as he also won the veterans section (picture hereunder), beating João Rodrigues (4-2). Paulo Laranjeira and Miguel Faria reached the semi-finals.

1st FISTF event in Kent a huge success!

With over 70 players in attendance, the first ever FISTF tournament in Kent, England was a resounding success!

The English International Open came to Gillingham’s 44Two Club where players competed in all categories including many youth players.

The Team event saw 10 teams battle it out in a competitive tournament. In the Semi-final, SC Eugies ‘A’ of Belgium beat Kent Invicta ‘A’ whilst Welsh legends, Cardiff Bluebirds, edged out London & Essex Utd ‘A’. The title was won by the Eugies in the end with a 3-0 victory over Cardiff.

In the individuals it was England’s Brian Butterworth who won the Open on shots 2-1 from Portugal’s Paolo Gouveia. The Veteran’s winner was Phil Redman with a narrow 1-0 win over Rudi Peterschinigg. Elliott Bellefontaine beat Connor Bowden to the Under 19’s title and Kimberley Devreese won the Ladies title. The Under 12’s and Under 15’s saw the two young warriors, Kye Arnold and Corentin Bouchez going head to head in the final of both categories. In the end it was the young SC Eugies star, ‘Coco’ who came out on top though beating Kent Invicta’s Kye in both finals.

Double success for Carlos Flores in Rome

Last week-end the grand prix of Italy was played in Rome. There were many excellent players taking part. In the Open category, Carlos FLores defeated Massimo Bolognino (5-1) in the final. It was a perfect week-end for Flores who also woon the team event with his clubmates of Reggio Emilia. They beat CCT Roma in the final. In the other individual categories, all winners came from Italy: Calonico in the veterans, De Francesco in U19, Borgo in U15, Giudice in U12.

Ouabi Rouis wins in Malaysia

On June 21 and 22 the Hartamas Tigers club hosted their first international event in Kuala Lumpur. This was a special tournament with a strong group from SIngapore taking part as well as Ouabi ROuis from France. The event had the double status FISTF and WASPA and 26 players in total took part. The Open category of the FISTF Satellite was also a “WASPA regional” with 23 players. There was no surprise as Ouabi Rouis (picture) was the stronger player, defeating Den Mulia in the final. Tan Kok Wee and Michael Choong reached the semis. The U19 section wasd also a “WASPA promotional event” with 8 players. Giovanni Choong proved to be an improving player by beating Luke Lim in the final. Isaac Lim and Malaysia’s Vishnu Varthana Sundram lost in the semis. Congratulations to all.
