A lot of Majors should be interested…

FISTF Celebrates International Women’s Day

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women of our sport, both on the pitch and behind the scenes, providing support to our members and assisting with the organising of events.
We also acknowledge that more needs to be done to bring women and girls into our sport.
FISTF also announces we will begin a process of changing our language and will gradually phase out the expression ‘Ladies’ referring to events with ‘Women’.
This is in line with the practice of most international sports federations as a more modern, contemporary expression.

Bartolo ends King Carlos’ winning streak at the Major of Frameries

Once again, Major of Frameries has gathered an amazing number of players, with 220 travelling from 17 countries, including from across the Atlantic.

On Saturday, the individual event had only just begun when there was a huge surprise as Marco Di Vito beat Carlos Flores, winner of the last 7 editions,
The message was clear for the famous Spanish player: his opponents were going to fight him hard.
But Carlos reached the final despite of very difficult games like against his team mate Luca Zambello in 1/4 final (7-6 in SD) or against World number 2 Christophe Dheur in 1/2 final who had many possibilities to get a draw.
In final, Malta’s Samuel Bartolo was waiting for him.
To arrive there, Samuel had also to win some amazing thrillers like against Georgios Genitsaropoulos in last 32 (shoot out) or against David Gonzalez in 1/2 final (sudden death).
In the final, Bartolo put on a perfect game and won 3-1, ending Carlos’ incredible winning streak.

In veterans, John Field, from Gibraltar won his second Major (after Milano 2023) breaking in the final Gianfranco Calonico’s dream to win his only great missing trophy.
In 1/2 finals, they had won respectively against Darren Clark and Carlo Alessi.

In the Women’s category, after eliminating Despretz sisters Léa and Emilie in the 1/2 finals, the two seeded players Audrey Herbaut and Carolina Villarigues met in final.
A shoot out was necessary to decide between them and the French Audrey won her 5th Major of Frameries.

In U20, the local player, Lucas Père won against French player Quentin Ausset in shoot out. The semi finalists were Noah Denne and Noah Janssens.

In U16, after having lost the final last 2 years, Malta’s Robert Farrugia Randon won the event against local player Louis Soret. Both 1/2 finalists were also AS Hennuyer’s players: Ruby Matthews and Jérôme Cyganek.

In U12, the English boy Max Pereira didn’t let any chance to his opponents during all the day.

In final, he won against Italian Davide Balito. 1/2 finalists were also Italians Alessandro Gandin and Alberto Barattucci.

On Sunday in the team event (with 42 teams) also brought very tough games.
In the semi finals, there were 2 games between Italian and Maltese teams. Both games were won by Italian teams by the same score 2-1: Reggio Emilia against Bormla and Eagles Napoli against Valletta SC (winner of last 2 editions).
In the final Reggio Emilia claimed it’s 10th trophy in Frameries.

Call for hosts of a FISTF Major

Dear table football community.
The following communication has been sent to all Member National Associations.

As you may be aware, the organisers of the Milan Major Grand Prix have indicated that the successful tournament held in December 2023 was, unfortunately, the last such event to be held in their city.
While next season is still 6 months away, this decision has prompted the FISTF Board to begin to consider the calendar for the 2024-25 season, including of course the Majors, which are showcases for our sport.
The FISTF Board is therefore calling for expressions interest from all MNAs interested in hosting a Major during the 2024-25 season.
Expressions of interest should be submitted by 30 April 2024.
Main selection criteria Per section 2.8.1 of the FISTF Handbook, applicants must comply with the following criteria:
A. Total number of individual participants in all categories the last time a FISTF event was organised in the city/club.
B. Total number of categories played (Open, Veterans, U20, etc.) the last time a FISTF event was organised in the city/club.
C. Total number of foreign players in all categories the last time a FISTF event was organised in the city/club.
D. Total number of top-10 ranked players in all categories the last time a FISTF event was organised in the city/club.
E. Total number of events (International Open, Golden Grand Prix/International Grand Prix and Major Grand Prix) organised/to be organised in the country of the candidate event during the current season.
F. An international airport in a short distance from the venue of the event
G. An overall evaluation judging the quality of venue, condition & number of tables, media coverage, organisers’ spirit of cooperation with FISTF, decided by FISTF Board.
Regarding the tournament system, it is mandatory to have both Individual and Teams events in a Major Grand Prix.

Additional requirements
Additionally, the following are mandatory obligations on the organisers of a FISTF Major Grand Prix:
A. Results file properly completed and submitted before the Friday after the event to https://fistf.com/contact/contact-fistf-for-operations-sport-calendar-rankings/
B. Live results delivered over the weekend for the Table Football Community.
C. Live streaming of at least ONE ”show table”. This must involve fixed cameras, scores on screen, and not roaming handheld. Commentary is optional.
D. It must be announced at least the day before the tournament where the live streaming will take place. It has to be a “public” space (no private Facebook group). Live streaming is mandatory only starting from Last 8. FISTF logo has to be present during all the live streaming in the bottom right corner of the screen.
E. A tournament report and podium photos are mandatory within 24 hours. FISTF will provide a template that Organisers can complete for tournament report.
F. Promotional posters/flyers to be displayed in the region of the event.
G. Ongoing promotion to local/national media/sports websites.

Further details regarding the requirements can be found in section 2.8.1 of the FISTF Handbook.
While the Handbook allows for a maximum of two Majors in any one MNA, and any application from an MNA currently hosting a Major will be considered, the Board would like to encourage MNAs which do not currently host a Major to consider applying, in the interests of spreading our game.

Application process
An application addressing the above criteria and additional requirements should be submitted via email to board@fistf.com together with a completed Form 04 (available at https://fistf.com/technical-pages/documents-library/). For Europe, an order of preference of three dates is requested on the Form 04.
The application must come from the MNA (rather than in individual club/organiser), but FISTF can contact the organisers if the Form 04 does not arrive on time.

Selection process
The Board will consider all expressions of interest and will announce its decision by no later than 31 May 2024.

Finally, regarding the existing remaining Majors (hosted in Belgium – Mons; France – Paris; Greece – Athens; and Italy – Bologna), in accordance with longstanding practice, the Board’s intention is to continue with these well-established events into the future.
However, in accordance with the FISTF Handbook, the Board reserves the right to reconsider in the future which five Grand Prix tournaments around the world are the best and should be allotted the status of Major Grand Prix. With kindest regards FISTF Board.

Bartolo and Valletta SC claim Maltese International Open

In the Open category, King Samuel once again demonstrated his supremacy on the island.

Indeed, after a group phase easily won by the supporter of the Floriana football club, two close matches in the 1/2 final and the final awaited him against two teammates.

The first to stand in his way was Maltese rising star Jurgen Balzan. Bartolo wins by the smallest margin (2-1).

In the final, it was his other teammate’s turn to give in. The world number 6 won against Mark Gauci (4-2), number 5 in the world rankings.

In the veterans category, Charles Aquilina, the painter from Bormla, won the final victory (2-0) against the always very solid John Zammit from the same club.

They respectively dismissed Patrick Pace (MLT/SS Lazio TFC) and Jason Pisani (MLT/ Bormla SC).

On Sunday, for the team competition, Valletta SC won yet another victory against their rivals from the Bormla club with a clear and flawless 4-0 victory, despite very close individual matches.

FISTF World Cup 2024 gains title sponsor from Eland Cables in build up to ‘it’s coming home’

Eland Cables, one of Europe’s fastest growing electrical cable suppliers to critical infrastructure, will sponsor the 2024 FISTF (Federation of International of Sports Table Football) Subbuteo World Cup, to be held in Royal Tunbridge Wells on 20-22 September.
This global event was last staged in the UK in 2012, in Manchester – more than a decade later the table sport that originated in Royal Tunbridge Wells is heading back to its birthplace and ancestral home.
Players from 32 countries will compete through group stages into knock-out rounds, to find the winners in youth and senior categories in both Individual and Team events.
In addition to being title sponsor, Eland Cables also hopes to have player representation too. Darren Clark, considered one of England’s most successful players, is their UK & Ireland sales director. Clark is seeking to qualify for Team England by playing a host of tournaments across Europe over the coming months.
Darren, now competing in the Veterans category, has previously won the English National Championships in 1994 and 2004 and represented England at previous Subbuteo World Cups, most notably in 1994 – a year when the national football team failed to qualify.

Darren Clarke

JS Pelland, executive director of Eland Cables, commented: “Our involvement in the FISTF World Cup is both exciting and fulfilling on many levels – how many firms can claim to have a national champion among their own staff? Beyond our luck with Darren’s Subbuteo track record, it’s exciting to be involved in a game many of our staff and clients have grown up with. Aside from nostalgia, the communities we work with will resonate with the desire to encourage young people away from digital devices, and this great inter-generational game of skill and fun is a way of bringing people together.”

JS Pelland – Elan Cables

Alan Lee, Chairman of the English Subbuteo Association, commented: “Having Eland Cables onboard as title sponsor of the FISTF World Cup is a real asset. We look forward to staging this exciting event with them as we welcome players and enthusiasts, from all over the world, to the birthplace and ancestral home of Subbuteo.”

ESA Chairman Alan Lee and FISTF Board Member Bob Varney

Subbuteo ‘table soccer’, was invented by Peter Adolph in 1947 in Royal Tunbridge Wells. It is recognised as the most iconic football game of the pre-electronic era. At its peak of popularity it had over 10 million players all over the world.
Eland Cables is a UK headquartered global supplier of electrical cables for electrification, digitalisation, automation, and green energy projects, supporting many high-profile national and international infrastructure projects.
FISTF President Steve Dettre said he and the whole FISTF Board were delighted with the development of having a naming sponsor for the premier FISTF event.
“We see this as a great step forward for our sport, and hope that it helps with development across the globe.
“We welcome Eland Cables to the table football community, and congratulate the ESA on showing what can be achieved with leading events.”
