Response to comments by Greek President

The FISTF Board has decided to respond to a posting on social media from Mr Georgios Dimakeas, President of the Greek association.

At the outset we should say that we are surprised that the post was noted as a ‘Formal Protest’. We would have expected such a communication would have been addressed directly to FISTF, rather than a social media post.

A key point to be noted is that the much debated entrance fee to the Cinecittà World (venue of the World Cup) is now €15, and not as previously noted, €22.
Those staying in designated hotels will be provided with the tickets as part of their accommodation fee.

Those not staying in designated hotels must contact the LOC. If you want the tickets, you can write to eventi@fisct.it.
This applies to all players and all MNA officials listed on the form F40B, not just those staying in
designated hotels.

As has been stated, the change of venue for the World Cup was an unfortunate and unexpected occurrence. As happens from time to time even in the world of professional sports, venues can be changed, and events postponed or cancelled. This was not intentional.

Regarding completion of the F40B registration form for the World Cup, the form clearly noted that there were six places for the Team members in team events. This was decided by the Board as a whole and was included in the FormF40B. Of the 18 Nations that submitted their Form40B listing teams to FISTF, only one (Greece) decided to add a 7th member.

It is true that I accepted the original form F40B on the basis that tickets were already booked. It was also pointed out by me that there were 4 players named in teams’ events who might be able to qualify for individual events as wild cards, once all prime players and reserves are allocated and there are spaces remaining. However, both the Open and Veterans Individual events are over-subscribed, meaning there is no space for any players as Wild Cards in Open or Veterans.

Mr Dimakeas’ post stated “they insist, without explanation to date, to declare a maximum of 6 players”.  This is incorrect. On 12-June in an email to Mr Dimakeas it was outlined that the number of 6 was decided by the Board to ensure smoother operation and less non-playing personnel around tables.

Mr Dimakeas’ post stated “Due to the above, the Greek Federation is forced to officially protest.”

As at midnight July 23, FISTF has not received any “official protest”, just notification of a social media post.

Concerning issues relating to the absence of a FISTF Sports Director. The FISTF Board has attempted for almost a year to ensure the position of Sports Director is filled.

We have on record one candidate who applied, but whose candidature was in fact not supported by the Greek association. For the sake of confidentiality, we prefer not to name the candidate nor the comments from the UHTF about this person.

We have no record of any other candidate from Greece.

We have actively pursued a number of other possible people to take the role, across a number of countries. One was keen to assist in the latter stages of the Calendar creation but had no interest in a fulltime position. Others outright declined, for a range of reasons. And we cannot speak on Mr Eric Naszalyi’s behalf whether he would be prepared to step back into the role from which he resigned.

If there is anyone keen to nominate for the role, please let us know.

As to the comments about our Secretary General: Mr Lo Presti has worked exceptionally hard over the last year with our extended Board, particularly with Roger Trouillard, to keep the world ranking operating and liaising with event organisers. The rest of the board has done what we can to help. But he has performed his normal tasks as well as doing the Sports Director duties. I should emphasise that he, like all of the Board, are volunteers, doing what we can for the benefit of the game we all love. But he – like the rest of the board — is waiting for someone to step up and help. And by that, I mean not just help the FISTF board, but the whole table football community.

The post alleges that Cinecittà World “does not meet the criteria of being in the city and having public transport”.

Nowhere can I find such a criteria listed in any FISTF documentation. In fact, the last tender for the World Cup, issued by FISTF in December last year, states:

It is highly recommended that the venue be in close proximity to a major international transport hub, with sufficient 2 and 3 star hotels nearby.

There is no reference to “in the city” or “having public transport”.

Out of interest, the Cinecittà World venue is 15km from Rome international airport.

Concerning transportation, we recommend that contact is made with your hotel/accommodation on the feasibility of a shuttle bus being organised. I know this has already been done by some delegations.

Michael Choong claims Singapore Open

The Table Football Association of Singapore once again concluded with another weekend of flicking action with the completion of the National Championships Tournament on 25 Jun and 26 Jun 2022.
The 2 days of flicking fun started with a small nostalgic Subbuteo Challenge, in which only Subbuteo figures of the 1980s were used, complete with their accompanying plastic stick keepers. The small event brought back old memories as players tried to adjust to flicking the more wobbly figures on cereal bowl bases.
At the end of the swiss format of play, the veteran player of Vikas Chandiramani prevailed to take the crown, beating the rest with his experience and deft long touches and shooting prowess.
The 1st day was followed by a 2nd half of events, with a novelty Mixed team event, where more players joined in to form random teams to compete against each other. This ‘team event’ managed to bring back some players whom have not flicked for a while since the Covid pandemic, and it did served as a good warm-up for what’s to come the following day, the Individual Open Event.

On the 2nd day, it was the Individual Open Event, which would be the official FISTF event for this tournament.
As expected, it was another day of superb demonstration of all the player’s grit and determination to try outplay each other in the respective matches.
At the end of the day, Rudy Hesty (Jurong Central) and Michael Choong (SC Dragons Hong Kong) remained resilient in their earlier plays, and reached the grand final, after beating their semi-final challengers of Anas Rahamat (jurong Central) and Nic Tan (SC Dragons HK) respectively.
The Grand Final, was as expected, a very close tussle between the two players, with very technical play and countless deft touches. It was a game of the speed of Rudy versus the cool relaxed play of Michael. at the Final Whistle, coolness won the day and Michael clinched the Champion’s title with a couple of very well taken goals.

Open winner Michael Choong

Rudy Hesty, Runner Up

Anas Rahamat (semi finalist)

Nic Tan (semi finalist)

Participating Nations Record – FISTF World Cup 2022 Rome

FISTF is pleased to announce a record 26 nations will participate at the FISTF World Cup 2022 Rome.
This beats the previous record of 24 who participated in the very first FISTF World Cup in Paris 1994.

This is a very important record and statement by the members of the FISTF community, if we consider this World Cup represents the restart for the international table football movement, after the abrupt stop due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The large representation, coming from every corner of the globe – all five continents — can be considered as a symbol of the will to resume playing and of the passion in practicing this sport at a competitive level.

It also represents a movement in constant and evident numerical growth all over the world.

This edition will be held at Cinecittà World – Rome organized by FISTF, together with FISCT and Opes Italia.

Full entry lists will be released by the weekend once complete validation of entries is completed.

FISTF World Cup Roma 2022 – Qualifying Process

The following is the official process for players to qualify for the FISTF World Cup.

For each category, 8 players will be selected based on the World Ranking at the end of May.

Only two players per country can qualify by this means per category.

FISTF will notify all MNAs which are the players who have qualified by this means.

Should one of these 8 players decline the invitation, then the World Ranking place remains unfilled, but the number of overall players in the tournament remains the same.

Separately, from June 1 to July 20 all nations are invited to nominate:

  1. Two players per category PLUS two substitutes
  2. A team for each category, comprising no more than 6 players.

The deadline for submission is July 20.

The maximum number of players from all countries in each category is as follows:

(i)           Open:                  64

(ii)          Veterans:            64

(iii)         Under-20:           32

(iv)         Under-16:           32

(v)          Under-12            32

(vi)         Women:              32

Once all nominations are received, FISTF will begin the process of filling vacant places, based on the formula outlined in the FISTF Handbook [2.8.2 (e)]:

  1. First substitute from a country that has no players selected by the World Ranking
  2. First substitute from a country that has 1 player selected by the World Ranking
  3. Second substitute from a country that has no players selected by the World Ranking
  4. First substitute from a country that has 2 players selected by the World Ranking
  5. Second substitute from a country that has 1 player selected by the World Ranking
  6. Second substitute from a country that has 2 players selected by the World Ranking

Please note: the vacancies will be filled based on the order that the players were listed on the official form F40B.

All ‘first substitutes’ will be processed according to their world ranking.
Therefore, if there are only three places vacant in the Draw of 64, but four players who are the first substitute from a country that has no players selected by the World Ranking, then the three highest ranked players will be chosen.

If there are sufficient places for all the first substitutes from a country that has no players selected by the World Ranking, then they all will be entered.

If there are still places to be filled in the Official Draw, then selection moves to the first substitute from a country that has 1 player selected by the World Ranking. Again, if there are more players than places, then the highest ranked substitutes will be chosen.

This process works its way through until all 64 places are filled.

  • If there are still places vacant, then special ‘wild cards’ can be offered, as per the FISTF Handbook:
Special wild cards can be awarded by the FISTF Board of Directors, on a case-by-case basis,

    • to players coming from Nations that are not FISTF MNAs or;
    • to players registered by their Nation only for the team competition, even if the Nation’s limits set in 8.2(d) are exceeded, to complete the maximum number of players in a category, only with approval of their MNA.

All players who are nominated by their Member National Association (MNA) or Provisional MNA must have a FISTF licence.

Each nation is permitted to nominate 6 coaches/officials for the tournament.
Each nation is permitted to also nominate 2 Association officials for the tournament’s formal functions.

In the lead up to the world cup, once the final lists have been announced, it is inevitable that late withdrawals will happen.
Each nation is permitted to replace these late withdrawals, whether for Individual or Team events.

However, all nations are expected to respect the FISTF Regulations:

2.6.7 Special Rules for FISTF World Cup

  • MNAs which:
    • withdraw from a World Cup Teams event after already having registered, and which fail to give an early notice of at least two weeks or to present a reasonable justification to the organiser of that competition within a reasonable time, or
    • leave the competition while they have already qualified for a next round of games, without playing their scheduled games (except for cases of huge delays of competition schedule),
    • A delay in competition may cause missing travel home on the same day (e.g.: Saturday or Sunday). If players stay overnight and travel home the next day (e.g.: Monday), they shall stay at the event and play and show respect to fellow competitors,
  • Shall be penalised as follows:
    • Withdrawal without giving an early notice of at least two weeks: 30 Euros per team
    • Withdrawal in the last 5 days before the competition: 50 Euros per team
    • Withdrawal in the last 48 hours before the scheduled start of the competition: 100 Euros per team and suspension of the withdrawn team from the next World Cup.
    • Additionally, National teams which leave the competition without playing their scheduled games will be awarded no world ranking points from the World Cup. (except for cases of huge delays of competition schedule or where a delay in competition may result in the players missing their travel home on the same day).
  • Players who:
    • withdraw from a World Cup Individuals event after already having registered, and who fail to give an early notice of at least two weeks or to present a reasonable justification to the organiser of that competition within a reasonable time, or
    • leave the competition while they have already qualified for a next round of games, without playing their scheduled games (except for cases of huge delays of competition schedule),
  • shall be penalised as follows:
    • Withdrawal without giving an early notice of at least two weeks: 15 Euros
    • Withdrawal in the last 5 days before the competition: 25 Euros
    • Withdrawal in the last 48 hours before the scheduled start of the competition: 50 Euros, deduction of 100 world ranking points and suspension from the next World Cup.
  • Additionally, players who leave the competition without playing their scheduled games will be awarded no world ranking points from the World Cup. (except for cases of huge delays of competition schedule or where a delay in competition may result in the players missing their travel home on the same day)
