Qualification criteria for the FISTF World Cup

As national selections for the FISTF World Cup are happening around the world, we thought it was an opportune time to reinforce the rules regarding nomination for each of the categories, as per the FISTF Handbook.

  • 2.8 FISTF World Cup
    • 2.8.1 General Rules
      • (a) The FISTF World Cup will be held biennially, in every even year (2020, 2022 etc).
      • (b) The maximum number of players in each category is as follows:
        • (i) Open: 64
        • (ii) Veterans: 64
        • (iii) Under-20: 32
        • (iv) Under-16: 32
        • (v) Under-12 32
        • (vi) Women: 32
      • 2.8.2 Selection of Players
        • (a) MNAs may nominate a maximum of 2 players in each category, the national champion in the referred category usually being one of them.
        • (b) Each MNA may also register a maximum of 2 reserve players in each category.
        • (c) In addition, the FISTF World Ranking at the end of May will be used to select players as follows:
          • (i) 8 Open category players (maximum 2 players per country);
          • (ii) 8 Veteran category players (maximum 2 players per country);
          • (ii) 8 U20 category players (maximum 2 players per country);
          • (iv) 8 U16 category players (maximum 2 players per country);
          • (v) 8 U12 category players (maximum 2 players per country);
          • (vi) 8 Women players (maximum 2 players per country).
        • (d) Consequently, an MNA can nominate up to 4 players in each category, including the reserve players, plus 2 more players from this country who qualify through FISTF World Ranking (maximum 6 players in this case).
        • (e) If the required number of players for the category is not reached as defined at 8.1(b), the priority for the selection of players is made according to the following criteria:
          • (i) First substitute from a country that has no players selected by the World Ranking
          • (ii) First substitute from a country that has 1 player selected by the World Ranking
          • (iii) Second substitute from a country that has no players selected by the World Ranking
          • (iv) First substitute from a country that has 2 players selected by the World Ranking
          • (v) Second substitute from a country that has 1 player selected by the World Ranking
          • (vi) Second substitute from a country that has 2 players selected by the World Ranking
        • (f) The World Ranking at the end of May will be used to determine the priorities for 2.8.2(e).
        • (g) Special wild cards can be awarded by the FISTF Board of Directors, on a case-by-case basis,
          • (i) to players coming from Nations that are not FISTF MNAs or;
          • (ii) to players registered by their Nation only for the team competition, even if the Nation’s limits set in 2.8.2(d) are exceeded, to complete the maximum number of players in a category, only with approval of their MNA.
        • This system can guarantee that nations have a balanced number of players in the individual event and can also help in having more national teams.
        • Additionally, there will be National Team events in all categories, limited to those Nations that are Members of FISTF.
        • Teams eliminated in the first phase (groups) of the World Cup shall be reformed into a second ‘Plate’ event to give them more competition during the tournament.

Proposal to rebrand the Federation

Following the 2020 FISTF Congress, a working group was created to further develop one of the resolutions carried by the Member nations, relating to the FISTF Corporate Identity Norm (Resolution J8).
Our organisation has been known as FISTF since it was established in 1992.
Originally known as the Federation of International Subbuteo Table Football, when there was a separation from any relationship with Hasbro, the ‘Subbuteo’ was changed to ‘Sports’.
But still the unfortunate negative connotations of the acronym remained.
The FISTF acronym is problematic in English. The fist is a powerful, politically-charged symbol that means many different things to people worldwide. It also refers to a sexual act, most commonly expressed in English.
It makes sense to try and change our name to something that cannot be mistaken for a negative word or term.
As well, creating an artificial brand of ‘Sports Table Football’ has not been taken to heart by the community. Placing this strong emphasis on the word ‘sports’ also tends to alienate us from the wider community who also want to just play casually or in clubs and not just in elite competition.

These numbers highlight the absence of a widespread desire to include ‘Sports’ in the title, and the majority identify more with Table Football or its derivation.
The percentage of Clubs that have adopted ‘Sports’ in their title is even smaller.
By giving ourselves a nickname that has nothing to do with actually describing our game, we are also advertising the logic that we are the “Sports” version of “table football”.

We have sent a proposal to each of the FISTF Member National Associations, proposing that we significantly change the name of the federation as well as our identity to better represent our position as a bold, modern and dynamic international federation.
We know that in such a competitive world, we must always evolve and adapt to stay relevant and appeal to a wider audience.
In the digital age, the acronym of our federation has developed negative connotations unrelated to our organisation and it is important that we rebrand to make sure our first impressions are as positive as possible.
We are proposing a new brand for us: Table Football International.

This is distinctive and simple to understand and reinforces the global nature of our sport. It is time that we stake our claim as the most dynamic table football game: We Are Table Football.

Ángel Valverde claims Spanish Championship and Cup double

Ángel Valverde (CAP Ciudad de Murcia) won the Spanish Championship and in the process qualified for the FISTF World Cup Rome 2022, beating Miguel Ángel López from Mallorca Águilas in the Open Final.

Spanish Champion and Cup Winner Ángel Valverde

The Championship and the Spanish Cup were both held on the same weekend, in the local Madrid town of Móstoles.
The event had a wide participation of players representing practically all the national clubs of the AEFM. A total of 23 players competed in the Open category and 16 in the Veteran category; The Sub 12 and Sub 20 categories would also have a large participation of enthusiastic young people.
A high level  of play was witnessed in both the Open and Veterans categories, where several champions from Spain and the world met.
ln the Veterans Juan Carlos Granados (CAP Ciudad de Murcia) took the victory and the Spanish championship this time against José Castellanos (Mallorca Águilas) who has shown a great level of improvement in his game.

In Sub 20 Carlos Pinto (Tiburones FM) won the category continuing his successful career from the lower categories.

In Sub 12 Enrique Villao (Moralzaral SC) rose as champion of Spain in a tough final against Manuel Baena (AC Los Remedios). Praise must be given to the Sierra de Madrid club that has been working very well with the youngsters.

Finally, Héctor Pérez (SC Móstoles) managed to win the Consolation trophy.
In the Spanish Cup held on Sunday, in the veterans category, it is worth mentioning the highly disputed victory against Antonio Montaño (Tiburones FM) by Raúl Benita (Turia FT). Turia’s man competed game by game, clinging to the table, with a game of the highest level.

Winner of the Spanish Cup Raúl Benita with beaten finalist Antonio Montaño

In the Open, Ángel Valverde repeated his triumph, this time against a very strong Fernando Gómez, achieving a double in a magnificent weekend for him.
In Sub 20 José Torres (Tiburones FM) managed to take the cup in a highly disputed final against the recently proclaimed Champion of Spain Carlos Pinto (Tiburones FM).
In Sub 12 this time yes, Manuel Baena played well to beat Enrique Villao to take the Cup to Estepa. Magnificent results for the Los Remedios quarry, proof of the great work they carry out with the little ones.
The consolation trophy, this time went to Jean Michel Cuenca (Tiburones FM).
In short, an excellent weekend full of reunions and table football at its highest national level, not suitable for heart attacks, especially due to the cries of Luis Mateos after finishing two great plays.
Next stop……Barcelona!

How to get your event prominence on the FISTF socials

It is the responsibility of all of us to enhance the image of our game, not just the board members and national associations.
Especially those organising events — from the World Cup, Majors and National Championships, to Satellites and even club based (and WASPA) events — need to make every effort to promote their activities.
We’re planning a series of articles over the coming months to provide ideas, advice and guidance.
We’ll also look at the whole area of live streaming.
Starting off, we’re looking at how you can get more prominence on FISTF.com and the associated social platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) for your events — before, during and after the event.
First thing to consider is an event poster.
To assist with placement, we prefer ‘portrait’ mode rather than ‘landscape’ mode.

Examples of portrait mode posters:
Posters can be as artistic as you like, or purely functional. It’s important to put the key information on them: What, when, where and why!
> What is the event name
> When will it be held — date and time
> Location
> Reason for the event.
There seems to be a growing trend for bigger and shinier trophies all the time. But maybe event organisers should consider a portion of their budget for posters that can be put up in friendly shops, centres and sporting clubs around the venue of the event. Let the general public know about your event as well.
More guidance on “Pre event publicity” will be coming soon.
Once the event is held, the results should be sent to FISTF at board@fistf.com
As well, a selection of photos from the event would assist for the website – especially photos of the winners and podium finishers… and PLEASE clearly mark who-is-who in the photos.
To make the event stand out on the website, a short story of the event would help.
We realise not everyone is a journalist, so here are some tips of what to include:
     > Who won in each category, what was the final score.
     > What was the standout feature of each final?
     > What was the standout match of the event?
     > What as the best goal?
     > What was the biggest surprise result?
     > Any standout players who need mentioning?
     > Who was the best referee?
     > Any beginners, new players or returnees who are worth mentioning?

All of this will assist in making your event more memorable.

Excellent story from the Glasgow IO
