Christmas message from FISTF

Dear Friends

As 2020 draws to a close after what has been one of the strangest, most unsettling and challenging years that many of us have ever experienced, myself and the Board of FISTF would like to reach out to all our Members, players, clubs, supporters and producers with a message of hope.

For many of us, the festive season will be unlike any we have ever celebrated, much like our competition season: disrupted, limited and often not what we had been hoping for.

Most of us have not had the chance to catch up with clubmates, friends and rivals this year, as event after event was cancelled. At the top of the list, the FISTF World Cup was postponed.

We are thankful to our member nations for accepting the cancellations and postponements with good grace, and listening to local authorities about the possibility of staging events.

Players around the world have also done what they can to organise club and local events, to keep their activity going within the guidelines of health advisories. A range of unusual events were also staged, including ‘solo’ leagues and competitions, shooting competitions and special draws, ‘zoom’ meetings and ‘virtual gatherings’.

For the time being, we cannot see a dramatic change to the opportunity to play. Even countries where the social distancing rules have been relaxed over the last few weeks have experienced sporadic lockdowns.

We need to focus on what is important at this time: the health and safety of our families and loved ones.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board members for their ongoing support and cooperation over the last four years. All of them have contributed in their own unique way: Fred, Horst, Eric, Adrianos, Stefano, Brandon, Daniel, Jason, Peter and KW all gave selflessly of their time. I am also looking forward to working with the new members, Mike, Jurgen and Francesco. I would also like to give a special thanks to Roger Trouillard and Frederic Perdaens for their tireless work behind the scenes for FISTF, and to thank so many people who have assisted us with editing documents, making suggestions, listening and being a sounding board. You all know who you are!

I’d also like to thank my wonderful clubmates at the Northern Falcons TFC in Sydney who continue to provide me with inspiration, along with the rest of the Aussie table football community.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and festive season, and all the best for a prosperous new year.

New FISTF Board meets, farewells departing board members

FISTF’s Board of Directors met during the week for the first time since the Congress and elections, and farewelled three members who stepped down from their positions, and welcomed three newcomers.

Horst Deimel (Austria) relinquished his position as General Secretary, after being elected in 2017. Horst brought incredible passion and organisational structure to FISTF, and his efforts have been widely applauded and appreciated.

Horst Deimel

He will be replaced by Francesco Lo Presti (Italy). Unfortunately, in a sign of the times, Francesco, who is a doctor, was unable to join the on-line board meeting, as he was required to work in the burgeoning COVID related crisis in his hospital. We look forward to his commitment to our sport.

Francesco Lo Presti

Table football veteran Stefano De Francesco (Italy) also stepped down from his role as Development Director, to be replaced by Jurgen Balzan (Malta).

Scam alert

As a service to both the sports table football and Subbuteo communities, we would like to warn people of a scam circulating on the internet under the guise of “Subbuteo Database”.
This site is misusing the Subbuteo logo.
Longshore, the Subbuteo license holder, joins us in warning against providing any information to this fake website.
This seems to be part of another scam to encourage people to provide their personal information and financial details to the fake FISA, which does not exist.

Elections and Resolutions – New Board elected

A new FISTF Board has been elected after the 2020 Congress, with some returning office bearers, and some new faces for the future.

Jurgen Balzan of Malta, possibly becomes the youngest FISTF Board member ever at 19, and has taken the responsibility for Development of our Sport. As the current No1 ranked U19 player in the world, he has a serious connection to the youth of our game and hopefully can bring a fresh approach to this critical area.

Speaking from Malta, Jurgen said: “I am honored to be part of this team and looking forward to work for the greater good in our sport.”

Joining him on the board is Canada’s Mike Sgro who was elected as Media Director.

“I am thrilled by my election to the F.I.S.T.F. Board of Directors in the Media Director role. I am humbled with this show of support from the National Member Associations and am prepared to do my best to showcase our wonderful sport to the world. We have just passed resolutions to ensure an update to the F.I.S.T.F. brand and I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with the entire board and wider community on this important initiative, among many others.

“Being from a country with such high growth potential for the sport, I have never before been so assured that this community continues to support growth in new regions. If anyone out there has ideas or suggestions for branding and/or media, please don’t hesitate to reach out and message me. I aim to strengthen the quality of conversations on how we perform our public relations. Most of all I hope everyone is staying healthy and happy through this oddest of holiday seasons.”

A critical new appointment is that of Francesco Lo Presti (Italy) to the role of General Secretary, replacing the outgoing Horst Deimel. We thank Horst for his fantastic work, and now look to Francesco, whose first task will be to ensure all information from each of the Member Nations is up-to-date as we move into 2021. Brandon Lavender (England), who had been on the board in a co-opted role, had his position confirmed at the election.

“I am happy that Federations from all over the world have chosen me for this important role. We must all work and collaborate together for the spread of our movement. Congratulations to all the others too!” said Francesco.

President Steve Dettre (Australia), Finance Director Fred Vulpes (Germany), Sports Director Eric Naszalyi (France) were all re-elected.

Several resolutions that will have a positive impact on the development for youth, such as the reverting of age categories to Under 16 and Under 20, were adopted. To ensure consistency, the Veterans category was confirmed as Over 45.
Canada’s membership of FISTF was confirmed, while South Africa, Chile and Norway are showing high interest in joining FISTF. A number of other nations have been in discussions, but more work will need to be done by the FISTF Board.

While both the Official Handbook and Tournament Organisation Handbook were approved, it was accepted by the Board that there needs to be more work done on these. Anyone who is interested in taking part in this work is encouraged to approach the FISTF Board.

While there had been a significant amount of work done of proposed changes to the FISTF Playing rules, no concrete decision was made and it is clear some amendments will need to be made. All MNAs will be approached about the next phase of decision making about the Rules.

The age categories change from u-15 to u-16 and u-19 to u-20, which is a return to the original age category from 1992/1993. This will give young players the opportunity to participate up to 10  years in youth categories, given an equal chance for Confederation and World Cup participation.

A significant decision was the vote to include a ”traditional Subbuteo’ category at the FISTF World Cup, A working group will be put together to decide on which rules to be used. This is a major development to encourage more players to participate at FISTF events. This will be a new “code”  for world sports table football. Many other codes exist too, such as Sector ball, 12 Touch, chapas and other codes.

It was agreed that FISTF is in need of an online database with online registration and more. The administration is getting more difficult and widely time consuming. A working group will be established to propose a way forward for this.

FISTF saw a need towards an Independent Homologation Executive Committee to challenge the applications by new manufacturers for all kinds of playing equipment.

A standardised FISTF Corporate Identity has been produced to ensure identical designs and usage  world wide, so that players, clubs, printing companies and manufacturers use the same designs given by FISTF. Colour definitions and FISTF Font are going to be standard features. All national associations will be provided with a standardised ‘kit’ of information, logos and fonts.

Three ambitious proposals, concerning the world cup, a world league and a separate club based system, were not passed, but the proposals provoked much debate and there is hope they can be revived and reworked in the future.

FISTF Statutes 2020 – Voting poll result

New Statutes for FISTF adopted

A completely revised edition of the FISTF Statutes have been accepted at the 2020 Congress by the Member National Association (MNA) delegates and will come into effect immediately.
This now means the new FISTF Board 2021-2024 can now be elected, including the newly adapted Board positions, which now have an official charter.
A range of resolutions presented to the Congress are now open to voting as well, starting on Monday, 30 November.

Vote results

Eligible MNAs were able to vote on the new Statutes 2020. The Statutes will be updated to reflect suggestions from our MNAs and Board members, mainly about clarity of language and ensuring consistency across the document.
The updated document will be transmitted to all MNA for a second reading round.
A proposed section from the draft Statutes (Article 12.1.7 ‘Conflict of Interest’) was not accepted by a vote of the members.
The FISTF Board thanks all MNA and Member National Association – Provisional (MNAP) who actively participated at the Congress and the MNAs for using their voting rights.
The online Congress with elections and voting is definitely the future for our Federation. It provided the opportunity for young, emerging associations around the world to participate in the discussions.
We also have a special thanks to Roger Trouillard (IT Admin) who managed the online Congress and voting polls.
MNA Delegates may proceed with all further voting polls on Monday, 30th November 2020.

FISTF Congress 2020

The FISTF Congress 2020 will be staged this coming weekend, Saturday, 21 November.
The start time will 1200hrs CEST.
Because of the current global pandemic, the Congress will be held ‘virtually’, online. This has become a common occurrence in the global sports community.

It is expected that almost 30 Member National Associations and Provisional Member Associations will participate, along with the FISTF Board Members.

Each nation is allowed one voting representative, but players who are registered with their national association may apply to ‘attend’ the Congress as observers. They will not have an opportunity to speak.

A range of issues will be debated over what is expected to take 4 hours.

This will include BoD reports, presentation of candidates for the new board, discussion of the proposed new Statutes, and other agenda items which have all been circulated to the Member Nations.

If you, as a player, want to know more information about observing the Congress, you should contact your national association for the link to register.

Major Bologna 2020 – Statement correction

Bologna goes ahead  –  Statement correction

As a result of a miscommunication, the notification issued last week contained an inaccurate attribution to the FISCT of its approval for the Major of Bologna.
We would like to issue the corrected statement, confirming that the Board of Federation Internationale de Sports Table Football (FISTF) supported that the Major of Bologna will proceed as planned.
While FISTF respects the recent decision (29th-September) of the Board of FISCT to suspend activities on Italian territory, the organiser of the Bologna Major was well under way with planning and financial commitment to the event.
The Major of Bologna will proceed under the auspices of FISTF. Those players who do not feel comfortable taking part are, of course, not obliged to attend. For those who do attend, all health precautions will be committed by the Organisers of the event.
But as in all sporting activities, participants take part at their own risk.
